Kornar Winmil Yunti – Aboriginal Men’s Wellbeing Service
Kornar Winmil Yunti ‘Men Working Together’
By Nicola Butler
Congratulations to Kornar Winmil Yunti Aboriginal Corporation on successfully launching your new service on July 4th 2012 at Tandanya here in Adelaide, South Australia!
The Hon Ian Hunter MP Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion launched the service along with guest speakers Brian Butler, Frank Lampard and members of the KWY Team Alban (Obo) Kartinyeri, Craig Rigney, Bonny Gibson & Stephen Simpson alongside the very moving and emotionally charged DVD “Men Speak” that will be made available for the public via KWY’s Website which is currently under construction and also via the Lateral Love Australia Website www.lateralloveaustralia.com
Kornar Winmil Yunti is a Ngarrindjeri name meaning ‘Men Working Together’. Kornar Winmil Yunti is a not-for-profit organisation that supports Aboriginal men from around South Australia and has links to Aboriginal men’s support groups around Australia.
Kornar Winmil Yunti consulted with Local Aboriginal male community members including Elders and have identified the need for a men’s space that includes the opportunity to get cultural support, yarn and listen to others.
The men identified the importance of a culturally acceptable forum for men to yarn, and talk about life and issues affecting them, in a safe and respectful environment. The men identified the need to have a place to go to maintain or rebuild their self-esteem, to raise awareness of healthy and respectful relationships and to manage difficult situations without the use of family violence, and other destructive behaviours that impact on themselves and their family.
Kornar Winmil Yunti hope to grow this space to include regular connection with men from around the state, and walk with them as they start on their journey of healing.
Yesterday’s launch was a wonderful celebration of this much needed and critical resource for our men in South Australia providing culturally appropriate programs for them to engage in to be supported in their journey of healing.
Our men are part of the solution to creating positive futures for our children, families and communities and with initiatives like KWY showing how the power of Lateral Love is capable of healing our generational traumas and providing the opportunity for us to understand the exact opposite of Lateral Violence and racism.
